Speech

Kennedy, I don’t know much about you so I have to make something up. Maybe you can change it a little according to how you like it. I cannot help you much on this speech, it is up to you to tell people about yourself. I’m not quite sure how to help you on this one actually. Because you would be telling the class about yourself. So it’s up to you how to do it. If you decide to use this speech, just take your time talking and add more detail and info if you like to make it longer.

============

Hi, My name is Kennedy. I’m going to be a different today and talk about something that happened to me in one of my classes. I am a computer science major. As such, I spend a lot of time in the computer lab and spend a lot of time in front of the monitor. A semester ago I was taking a class called Data Structures.

In this class we were required to do a lot of in depth computer programming. I won’t say that I’m very good but I will say that I know how to program. There was a girl in my class who was in the computer lab working on her program. I could tell she was having trouble with the program. So she asked one of her friends to help her. Her friend wasn’t able to help her so her friend told her to ask me if I could help her out. Then I heard her say something like, “Oh him? He’s black, I don’t think he knows it and won’t be able to help at all. Nevermind.” Of course after hearing this I was a bit upset, but if anything I was disappointed. I really didn’t want to help her because of her attitude. But after I thought about it for a while, I walked over to her and offered my help. I realize that I wasn’t the type of person to hold anything against anyone. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and I wasn’t going to hold that against them. After sitting a few minutes, I was able to solve her problem and help her to finish her program. I could tell from her face that she was a bit shocked that I was able to help her out. As I stood up to leave, I just told her , “You know, there are more to people than just the color of their skin.” I didn’t mean to embarrass her any by saying that, but sometimes you have to really stand your ground. After that I just left and I could see her sitting alone thinking. I don’t know if I got through to her or not, but a few days later she approached me and thanked me for helping her out.

One of the things I hate most about life is that people tend to judge books by their covers, or in my case, skin color. I realize that people are entitled to their own opinion and thoughts and I’m sure that they must have had a bad experience previously that would have caused them to think the way they do. I just wish people wouldn’t let one experience jade the way they think about everyone else. It’s that type of stereotype that makes it hard for the world to unite. I’ve learned that in life people are very flawed, including myself. But if it’s anything that I’ve learned it’s that you can’t judge people just by their appearance or skin color. I would like to think that we’ve evolved enough to get past this primal level of thinking.

I suppose if there is anything that I would want the world to know about me is that overall I’m not a bad guy. If they only looked beyond my skin color they would see that.
