Dyslexia Essay, Research Paper

Dyslexia was once known as the disorder used to explain why a child had difficulty reading, and this difficulty could not by explained by any other problems. This definition was not satisfactory for the parents, teachers, or researchers. There are now three different definitions. The most basic is dyslexia is a condition that makes it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell in your native language. It is a lifelong disorder that is neurologically-based which interferes with the processing of language.

Dyslexia is an inherited disorder. It is found on the sixth chromosome. The gene that carries dyslexia is dominant, making it run on in families.

People with dyslexia have a neurological difference. They have unusual wiring , meaning that their neurons are found in unusual places and are a little disorganized.

Some common classroom accommodations can include many things. For example, a teacher could reduce the homework load given to the student. Many teachers do not realize that it takes a dyslexic student three to four times longer to complete the same assignment as a non-disabled peer. Dyslexic students usually have terrible handwriting. This often affects the grading of the assignment. Teachers should grade on the content of the work and not the spelling or handwriting. The teacher could ask the student how he/she learns best. They should learn the strategies and techniques that help the dyslexic students learn.

Some other accommodations mentioned in the article are oral testing, untimed tests, eliminating or reducing spelling tests, don t force oral reading, and reducing copying tasks.

No two people with dyslexia are the same. Their symptoms can be different and may vary from mild to severe. There are many symptoms of dyslexia which can begin as soon as a child begins to learn.

Dyslexic people tend to read in a slow, labored, choppy voice. Their comprehension may be low due to spending so much energy in reading. They also invert, reverse, or transpose letters. Invert means to flip a letter upside down. For example, if they saw the word may, they would read way, or we for me. Reverse means flipping a letter horizontally, such as ded for bed, or bog for dog. And transposing letters means switching the order. The word on would become no, or gril would replace girl. Dyslexic people often omit, misread or even add words, such as an, a, from, the, to, or of into their reading.

They often misspell many words and often have poor or illegible handwriting. Many people misinterpret this poor handwriting as having low intelligence. That is not true. If one were to speak with a dyslexic person, you would find them to be quite bright.

Although dyslexia s struggle in areas such as reading writhing, and spelling, they are often very gifted in areas controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain. They tend to have a vivid imagination, artistic skills, musical ability, and math conceptualization skills. Even very famous people are affected with disorders. Tom Cruise, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Robin Williams, and Beethoven are all individuals who have suffered.
