Trendy High Heels
Have you ever seen something and your first reaction was to buy it regardless how much it cost? I know I have. My friend buys a pair of sneakers for one hundred fifty dollars every two to three months. My sister buys uncomfortable shoes for fifty dollars just because they look sexy. There are many people in our society that go out and purchase themselves shoes for many different reasons. But the number one reason is to look good in them while making a fashion statement. We, as human beings, want to reveal our individuality through clothing. I?m not saying that?s the only way to reveal our individuality, but one of the ways. We go out of our way to look good. We want to stay with the ?trend league?. One kind of shoe that is very trendy and popular is high heels. We all know that those shoes are uncomfortable. You can?t wear them ?after an hour or more? (25) without feeling some uncomfort. In my essay, I will use an essay from Susan Estrich ?High Heels: What a Pain!? to support my paper. Even though high heels are uncomfortable, women choose to wear them because of its popularity and it makes them feel and look sexy.
?The conventional critique is that woman are slaves to the male-dominated, model-obsessed fashion culture, leading us to sacrifice our toes and our checkbooks to satisfied some man?s idea of sexy shoes.?(25) This statement was from Susan Estrich ?High Heels: What a Pain!? This is a good example of why the shoes are so popular and trendy. ?Shoes can be dangerous to your feet. The thinner and higher the heel, the greater the risk of bunions, hammertoes, back pain, corns, and calluses.?(25) Another example of the sacrifice women goes through wearing high heels. I don?t think bunions and calluses are sexy at all. But the women who wear high heels don?t care, as long as the shoes look good on them. ?Much of the coverage of this year?s return to stilettos as high as six inches focuses on the shoes and the short skirt that go with them as a statement by women of their sexiness, voluptuousness, and feminity.?(25) This is a good example of women feeling sexy wearing high heels. I guess the more skin you bare and the higher the heels are, women feel sexier. They feel curvaceous. When I wear high heels, I feel sexier. I feel more feminine and womanlier. It?s also all in the head. Susan Estrich states, ?Supposedly, wearing high heels pushes your breasts out by changing your center of gravity?. Feet look smaller in high heels. High heels make a women?s leg look longer, and everyone looks better with longer legs.? It?s all imaginative. It?s all in the head. When a woman wears high heels, she thinks she?s sexier because of the sex appeal the shoes give her. Therefore, if she thinks she looks good, she will feel good. It pushes up her self-esteem.
Second, high heels are popular to those business type women. High heels are worn often with business attire suits. High heels do look nice and sexy. The heels with a skirt and a suit jacket all combine perfectly giving it a classy touch. You see the same outfit when window-shopping at the mall. You even fantasize about yourself wearing the same outfit and the same high heel shoes. Many businesswomen chose to wear those shoes because it?s simply a fashion trend. When you flip through the magazines, you see the model wearing a business outfit with that high heel shoe. It?s simply a sex appeal for businesswomen thinking that they are empowering through their appeal. I?ll give you an example. A type of businesswomen I?m talking about is a lawyer. They are well respected and idolized by many average American women. Many businesswomen chose to wear those shoes because it?s simply a fashion trend. When you flip through the magazines, you see the model wearing a business outfit with that high heel shoe. It?s simply a sex appeal for businesswomen thinking that they are empowering through their appeal. I?ll give you an example. A type of businesswomen I?m talking about is a lawyer. They are well respected and idolized by many average American women. Our idea about them is power and money signs. Then think about what kind of shoes they wear to court. You rarely ever see them in sneakers or loafers. They are in high heels. It?s a fashion statement made by a lot of women and businesswomen. It seems so natural that high heels go with certain outfits such as those business suits.
Lastly, women wear high heels for special occasions. I am the type of person who wears sneakers and loafers. I like wearing comfortable shoes, but I know on special occasions, I have to sacrifice. Sacrifice pain. There are times when you dress up and high heels are the only shoes that look good with your outfit. For example, when you?re at a wedding. What kind of shoes do women usually wear? High heels. When a woman is a t a Christmas Ball or at a party, they like to wear high heels. When they are at church, women like to wear high heels. There is no special place where only high heels are allowed, but a lot of women chose to wear them. It makes them look dressier for the occasion. ?Now I just have to get invited somewhere in my high heels.?(26) The author gives us this idea she ?s not a high heels type of women, but admits to owning a pair. She?s also saying she can wear them out on a special occasion, like a date. High heels are useful. They are the perfect shoes for special occasions. It?s worth it to many women to sacrifice pain to look good. I know when I?m at a special event, I see more than half the women there wearing high heels and revealing outfits. Most men were staring and gawking as they walked by. My last opinion about high heels would be the higher the heels are, the cheesier they look because they remind me of hooker shoes. High heels are worn for every occasion regardless if it?s special or not. But during special events, you often see higher heels.
It matters what we wear. We judge and are judged by others every day. Our clothing is one way to reveal our individuality. There is so much competition amongst women just by their appearances. One way women reveal themselves is portraying a sexy look. One way they do this is by wearing high heels. High heels are uncomfortable and any women can tell you that. But it doesn?t matter because the shoes make them look taller, feminine, and have longer looking legs. As long as a woman feels secure about what she?s wearing, let her. Even if the shoes are killing her feet, the appearance obviously comes first. We live in a competitive world and there are many competitive people out there. We live in a society where looks seem to come first because that is the number one first appearance. People judge by appearances before getting to know the person first. High heels have been and will be popular. It has been around for so long that I don?t even think it will ever go out of style. We live in a trendy world where we create our own fashion statement. Regardless of the pain and money, high heels will always be worn my women all over the world.
