As The Twig Is Bent

After reading the last chapter in As The Twig Is Bent I started thinking. What was the whole purpose of the actual writing, What ideas and attitudes was he trying to convey and how does Terry Lane the author shape the readers response through different techniques and conventions.

So I wondered these pondering questions to myself and I soon had an answer for the plague driven questions that buzzed inside my brain

The author, Terry Lane has a really good idea on what he conceives life to be and how to live it. From being adopted, to interviewing many famous people for the going into the writing of a biographical childhood book. During Lane s childhood he always felt that being adopted wasn t a disadvantage to his life yet a break through. He out of all the other children at the adoption agency his parents chose him. He was the best in the bunch. This saying is one that helped shape Lanes life and how he lives it.

The chapter as a whole seeks to convey that Terry Lane is not a researcher in child psychology but is only an interviewer. And his interpretations shape the way you read the text. He (Terry Lane) is also trying to teach the reader that your childhood is there to shape you and to help you find who you really are in this technologically advanced era.

Some of the techniques he uses to show this are the large use of the point that Lane was adopted. And that because of the adoption he had a secure childhood. While some one living in the streets obviously did not have a secure lifestyle and their wasn t that extra security blanket for the street person to have and to hold.

If Lane had of decided for a different approach to the actual writing of this chapter it could of changed the readers perspectives and made the whole childhood argument unreasonable. For example if we started with I feel that Bob Hawke is a man with a demonstrated ability to argue and not gone with his opening statement of his childhood adoption. The whole concept would be unrecognizable.

So now we know why people with a good family background and a good childhood are going to have reasonably good lives while people that live on the streets are going to hate theirs.
