The Convergence Of The Twain Essay, Research Paper

The Titanic set sail for it’s maiden voyage on April

12,1912 . This beautiful ship was made of the strongest iron

available to man during this time. The Titanic was believed to be the ship that even God could not sink. However, on April 14 tragedy stuck. Over 1,000 people were lost at sea when the titanic sank. With this catastrophe, people learn that when vanity and pride displace the fear of God the end result is destruction.

Vanity, the first aspect that brought the downfall of the Titanic. Vanity is defines as something that is vain, empty or valueless. The builder of this ship constructed it to be very beautiful. The Convergence of the Twain states that the Titanic had “steel chambers and jewels in joy designed”(1165). The people of the Titanic were so concerned with the outer appearance of the ship that they did not take the time to really work on the inside. In the same respect, people so often strive to be perfect on the outside while neglecting the inside. The Bible says in 1 Samuel 16:7 “The Lord does not look at things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” As the people in the Titanic learned vanity is the beginning of destruction.

As a result of their continual emphasis on the visual aspect of the boat, the people became very prideful. Since the Titanic was “unsinkable” those involved with the ship believed their human abilities were greater or equal to those of God. The poem says that it as “the pride of life that planned her”(1165), meaning that the people did not build the ship to glorify god but rather themselves. The Bible says in Proverbs 11:2 “When pride comes than comes dishonor.” When humans desire to bring glory to themselves instead of God, they set the stage for destruction. It was not an accident that the Titanic sunk because while the men were making the ship, God was planning her mate the ice berg to convergence together. God never changes and since he judged the people of the Titanic for being prideful , he will do the same today.

The Titanic was like no other ship of its day. Many people did not even think God could sink it. As history proves they were wrong because on April 14, 1912, the Titanic sunk.
