After watching the video on pornography last week in class I decided to do a paper on whether or not all pornography should be illegal. I will take the position that pornography should be kept legal by arguing, that pornography is in some shape or form beneficial to society in several various ways. Any action to make porn illegal taken from the video last week would go against the First Amendment in the United States. In my view pornography can be viewed as an expression of freedom of speech. My main argument is that pornography is beneficial to society. Pornography provides pleasure for people who are unable to find sexual fulfillment, it helps society be more open about the topic of sex, and aids in helping couples deal with problems in their sexual relationships.
Pornography can provide pleasure for those who are unable to find sexual fulfillment. There are many disabled and disfigured people who could never fill their sexual needs without pornography. Society’s standards often deny these people of sexual activity with anyone. Sexual fulfillment is a primal desire that everyone has the right to; if nobody involved gets hurt. Without pornography, many people would turn to prostitution, which already is illegal in most places. Pornography aids in the destruction of this. People who criticize porn should really think about the people who are in situations like these. If pornography becomes illegal the situation will just become worse. Politicians and activists will just digger themselves into a deeper hole in the end.
Pornography can also help society be more open about the topic of sex. As we heard in seminar last week, pornography and nudity in other cultures survives because everyone excepts in and doesn t bother to think twice about it. Today, we live in a country where most people consider sex a forbidden subject to talk about. People should not be ashamed of their sexual orientation or desires. Pornography can be used to start and stimulate open discussions about sex. If parents would talk to their children about the topic of sex, everyone would be sexually educated. Society can only benefit if everyone became educated about sex.
Finally, pornography can help couples deal with sexual problems in their relationships. Many couples cannot reach sexual fulfillment by themselves. Pornography is often used as therapy for couples with sex disorders, or couples who are not satisfied with their sex lives. For many, a happy sex life leads to a better relationship, which leads to better families. The use of pornography in this situation is essential and crucial to many couples lives. Without the use of pornography many couples relationships could deteriorate due to lack of sexual fulfillment.
Again as we learned from lecture last week the pornography business is a billion-dollar industry. Millions of people view pornography and benefit from it. There are many movies and television shows that view violence as an acceptable way of life. That does not mean that people will go out and kill others just because of a program that they had previously viewed. Also, there is no movement to make the sale of violent movies illegal. Judging from class comments society has the idea that seeing somebody naked is worse than seeing somebody killed. It just seems like North America doesn t want to deal with the topic of sex and nudity. Really its mind boggling sometimes and often the topic causes controversy. The argument at the end of class last week between two girls is a prime example of this. Its amazing how upset people can get over this topic.
One thing that bugs the hell out of me is that pornography does not make everyone view women as sexual objects. Women are not forced to be in pornography and they are paid for what they do. It is like a job for them. People who are waiters serve the needs of their customers, but are not viewed as slaves by society. The same rule should apply for women who choose pornography as their profession. Freedom of speech is the foundation of North America and if pornography is made illegal, other rules will soon follow. As one person said last week from class Nobody is forced to view pornography . The right to view pornography is given to everyone of the legal age.
In conclusion pornography is beneficial to society in many ways. Making it illegal would not only hurt society, it would violate the right to freedom of speech. The topic of pornography is very controversial. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. I have given mine. I m sure that most people in the class will do the same for this assignment. As a result of what transpired at the end of class last week proves just how controversial the topic of pornography can be. Some may argue, I find it interesting. Pornography is all a matter of opinion.
