Environment Friendly

The Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) is a unique environmental organization. It just doesn?t talk about whales and dolphins, it actually studies and protects them first-hand. Their research efforts helped create marine sanctuaries in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States; save dolphins from deadly fishing practices in South America; and establish whalewatching as a replacement for whale killing.

The PWF currently does research projects in Hawaii and Australia that involve educating the public about marine mammals as well as protecting them in the wild. PWF is recognized worldwide as a pioneer and leader in non-invasive marine research. The long-term field studies of whales, dolphins, turtles and reef eco-systems allow them to monitor changes in the status of threatened or endangered species. Their headquarters is located in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii, where they have stores that help the costs of the research projects. A certain percentage of sales go to the funding of PWF research. To help funds, they offer memberships and accept general donations.

Through public education efforts, nearly one million people have learned first-hand about the ocean and their role in its stewardship. PWF?s research data is provided to policy makers worldwide, because knowledge is the cornerstone of effective conservation action.

I support the PWF because I am against killing marine mammals. I currently am Zoology major with concentrations in zoo and aquarium science and marine biology. Helping to protect marine life and to conserve the environment in which they are living is very important to me. I will help as much as I can to save these magnificent creatures of the ocean.

My part with this organization is quite interesting. This past summer I was an intern for PWF on the island of Maui. I helped with their research as well as educating the public about marine life and they too can be part of PWF. The project I was involved in was the Spinner Dolphin Project. Here we conducted surveys in different areas where groups of dolphins were sighted. The contributions I make to the foundation are by donating money to their research and informing others of their organization. If I can get one persons support I am doing my job. I encourage all to help protect our marine life, for as where would the sparkle be in a child?s eye when they see a dolphin or a whale for the first time.
