Serbs Held in Kosovo Escape

I chose to write my essay on an article regarding the escape of Serb war criminals from a NATO prison camp.

This article relates to the world because it deals with a group of people who did some very bad things to another group of people. In turn many nations got involved and spent a lot of time, energy, and money to stop this genocide. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is on a “Peace Keeping Mission” in Kosovo, nearby Bosnia, and several other countries and regions affected by the Serbs’ race motivated holocaust. They have arrested several Serb military personnel and are holding them on charges of war crimes.

A small group of Serbs has been detained and is awaiting trial for crimes against humanity. This specific article is about fifteen criminals who managed to escape from the NATO run facility and the 13 who have avoided capture. The NATO officials that were interviewed said (in my own words) that this is not only a bad situation because there are criminals running around, but this is a bad situation because of the fact that this may injure NATO’s reputation towards both the “bad guys” that it is suppose to stop, and the “good guys” that it is suppose to protect.

My opinion of NATO involvement in the Serbia region, is that it is good that we stopped the slaughter and if the Europeans want to stay and protect the ethnic Albanians that is fine and we should help them as much as we can with non-military aid. This is a war that has been going on for many centuries and the problem is that now the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) is slaughtering, raping, burning, and performing many other of the very same atrocities that they had done to them by the Serbs. The difference now is that they can perform these awful tasks under the cover of NATO peacekeeping forces (if Serbs fight back they get in trouble by NATO).

My opinion of American involvement in the Serbia region is that there is no American interest in that area so we should withdraw all U.S. military personnel. We stopped the destruction of the Albanian people by the Serbs. Arguably that was necessary, but it is not worth risking American lives over a conflict that has been going on for hundreds of years and will continue for many more years until one group has wiped out the other.
