Maximilien Robespierre

Maximilien Robespierre was born on May 6, 1758 in a little town of Arras to Francois Robespierre. He received an education at a local college then, he got selected to go to a prominent educational institution. His interest in humanity and the abused rights of all sorts of people led him to formulate a more philosophy out the rights of man. One of Robespierre s many published memoirs, which gained him his reputation for being a defender of the oppressed , he wanted Louis the XVI to be removed as King. He wanted to create a republic.

He was the leader of the twelveman Committee of Public Safety. The committee was among the most creative bodies ever seen and they made policies, which stabilized the French economy. In addition, it formatted a very successful French army. Never the less, the committee directed it energies against counter revolutionary uprising, especially in the south and west of France. When they did this it caused the reign of terror. The reign of terror happened from the mid 1694 to the mid 1793. Also, during that period was a period of a very effective government. The changes that happened during the reign of terror later enabled Napoleon to dominate Europe for a generation. In Robespierre s speech of February 5, 1794 he said that in the five months from September 1793 to February 5, 1794, the revolutionary tribunal in Paris convicted and executed 238 men and 31 women and acquitted 190 people, and on February 5, 1794 there were 5,434 people in prisons in Paris awaiting for trails.

Maximilien Robespierre was frustrated with how the revolution was going. The Revolution abolished the traditional calendar with its Christian associations. Many of the people were anti religion, but Robespierre was interested in religion, and promoted a state cult, first of Supreme Reason and then later of the Supreme Being. After Robespierre issued threats to the National Convention. He was arrested in July 1794. He tried to shoot himself but missed and spent his last few hours with his jaw hanging off. His own machine killed him from his own laws. The machine that killed him was the guillotine, which he made. The guillotine was a machine for beheading people, used as a mean of execution during the French Revolution.
