Большинство, но не все системные васкулиты были описаны ещё до того, как это сделали те, чьи имена они носят. В большинстве случаев авторы, давшие имя нозологической форме, при помощи доступных им чётко определили клинические и патофизиологические признаки соответствующих заболеваний. Во всех случаях это были проницательные описания, которые сформировали основу их и нашего понимания этих болезней. В некоторых случаях авторы тщательно и систематически обобщили результаты ранних наблюдений, что позволило им выделить самостоятельную форму болезни (Генох и Шенлейн). Иные использовали гистопатологические методики (Хортон, Вегенер, Бехчет) или эпидемиологические подходы (Кавасаки), которые сделали описания заболеваний вехами современной медицины.
Вклад этих авторов имеет огромное значение в формировании современных представлений о васкулитах. Ранние описания также представляют собой вдохновляющие примеры того, насколько важны клинические описания, сделанные практикующими специалистами, в развитии медицинской науки.
