Слід зауважити, що дослідники вигуків зазначають, що «опис і тлумачення вигуків незважаючи на оманливу простоту їхньої форми є серйозною проблемою», а словники тлумачать вигуки, вживаючи спосіб апеляції до імен почуттів. Лексикографічний опис вигуків зазнав серйозної критики в працях А. Вежбицької, Ф. Амеки, І. Шаронова, Н. Добрушиної. Остання присвятила цій проблемі спеціальну статтю. А. Вежбицька зазначає, що тлумачення вигуків, зокрема емоційних, не розраховане на правила активного вживання вигуків у мовленні, оскільки у словниках «тлумачення не належать до того типу тлумачення, яке могло би бути корисним для того, щоб навчитися, як їх вживати».
Отже, подібні вигуки виражають майже увесь спектр людських емоцій, почуттів. У зв’язку з цим вигуки з контекстуально-обумовленим значенням можна поділити на кілька груп, кожна з яких у свою чергу залежно від контексту, ситуації поділяється на підгрупи, до складу яких входять вигуки з семантично дифузними функціями. Розглянемо склад груп вигуків з контекстуально-обумовлним значенням.
І. Вигуки, що виражають позитивні емоції, які включають широкий спектр приємних почуттів й переживань:
1) радості, захоплення: ah!, aha!, bless me!, Jove!, ha!, hah!, heigh!, hey!, heh!, hoy!, hurra!, hooray!, Lord!, Oh, Lord!, my!, oh my!, my-o-my!, O!, Oh!, say! Наприклад: «Admirable! What did I tell you? Hear, hear!»; …rising joyously to take the paper: «Oh! Congratulate me, my friends.»; «I have a good news for you, Sidney.» «By George! Did you get it for me?» «I think so,» said the Governor. «It ain’t official, but it’s a promise, Lieutenant, or lieutenant – commodore, or whatever you call it.» «Lieutenant – Commander. By George, that’s great, Karl. You’re a peach!»; «You’ve made me so awfully happy. I say, what a lack life’s going to be.»; «Lord! – it’s grand to be back again»; «My! Don’t they look nice!»;
2) піднесення, натхнення: hurra!, hooray! oo! Наприклад: «Hooray! And then we’ll have more and fun»; … he rubs hands gleefully: «Hooray!»; … peering round him ecstatic: «Hurrah! Not gone off yet!»;
3) збудження, радісного хвилювання: dear!, dear me!, deary-me!, oh God!, good God!, dear God!, Good Lord!, heigh!, heh!, here!, ho!, look!, look here!, wow! Наприклад: «And – concerts! Wow! Of course that would be marvelous!; «Good Lord! – I know them all, every one.»;
4) симпатії: indeed, oh. Наприклад: … sympathetic: «Indeed, sir»; … breaking down again: «Oh you beast! you pig! Swine, swine, swine, swine, swine! Now!»; «That heathery, salty, fresh smell. Oh – lovely, lovely.»;
5) полегшення: George!, now! now then! o! oh! whew! Наприклад: «Whew! That took a long breath», «Whew! That alters the case a bit», до якого близьке за значенням почуття наступної рубрики;
6) задоволення, яке часто є почуттям задоволення від зробленого адресатом чи адресантом. Наприклад: «Oh, very well, very well: I will write another prescription»; …surprised by this sign of grace, and a little touched: «Well -».
2. Вигуки, що виражають негативні емоції й переживання, іллокутивна сила яких змінюється від збентеження, нервозності до огиди, відчаю. Ці одиниці розглядаються за ступенем зростання інтенсивності негативних емоцій і переживань. Серед них виділяються такі, що передають:
1) жаль, хвилювання, неспокій, каяття, розчарування: ah!, bless me!, o!, I say!, well! Наприклад: … important voice: «The-ah-situation is serious. It is up of the-ah-leisured classes…» «My God! You were brought up as I was.» «Alas.»; «Bless you! They wouldn’t cash it: I’m overdrawn as it is.»; …sighs: «Well, we were civilized and happy once.»;
2) неприємні почуття, відчуття: my!, oh my!, my-o-my!, phew!, Lord!; oh, Lord!, um! Наприклад: …shivering: «Oh Lord! Oh Lord!»; «My inside! O Lord!»; «Phew! I say, this is awful, hell!»; «I’ve been obliged to dance myself. Phew!»;
3) збентеження, нервозність: ah!, aha!, bless me!, eh!, ha!, haw!, o!, oh!, say!, ugh!, well!, why!, yes! Наприклад: «Fact is – well – I’m in low water.»; … nervously: «Ah! Yes, I know…»; «ah-hm-ha-yes-say no more, Mrs. Dubedat: you shall not move.»; … rather awkwardly: «Why-yes-pretty good.»;
4) неспокій, хвилювання, знервованість: go to hell!, hell!, pardon!, pardon me! Наприклад: «But – but – pardon me – is it because you don't intend there should be any more song? Is that your intention?»; «Hell! What a policy? Um?»;
5) розчарування: my God!, oh my God! Наприклад: My God, are you mad? Shrieked Baby, keeping her distance as though she feared that indeed this must be the case. Speak to us, Ottilie.; «My God! I’ve been screaming with boredom at you for months and months.»;
6) зневаження, презирство: humph! Jove! o! oh! whew! Наприклад: «By Jove! That fellow smells a rat!»;
7) огидy: ha! hah! hat! ugh! Наприклад: … disgustinly: «Snoops Linchester – my hat!»; хоча вигук ugh швидше виражає неприхильність до когось. Наприклад: «You don’t think you’ll marry him then, Hazel?» «Ugh! I’d just as soon marry a – a ferret.»; Romanticism! Ha!»;
8) фізичний і душевний біль, страждання: ah! o! oh! oo! ugh! wow! Наприклад: «Wow! My shin!». Tут вигуком wow передається фізичний біль, і Her face grew set in its lines, but her eyes shone with the devotion of a martyr as she answered, «Ah… no! For my mind is made up!», в якому вигуком ah позначаються душевні страждання.
Характерно, що такі вигуки можуть вживатися замість цілого речення, на що вказують різні дослідники. Так, Г.В. Колшанський зазначає: «Взаємодія ситуації і вербальної поведінки дуже оригінально виявляється у взаємовідношенні, наприклад, мовлення і вживання вигуків, так званих фізичних вигуків. Очевидно, що подібні звуки при еліпсі «боляче» може компенсувати речення Мені дуже боляче». Приклади аналізу прагматичного контексту дав Т.А. ван Дейк, М.Л. Макаров, Д. Уїлкінс та інші. Наприклад: Oww! That hurt! Oh! Ow! That hurt! Oh!;
9) обурення: gracious!, good gracious!, ha!, hah!, indeed!, Jove!, no!, o!, oh!, really!, say!, well! Наприклад: «Ha! I’m not a tame cat…»; Wut: «We are – ha! – going to have a pleasant meals.»; «Ah! yes, I see. But you see, sir, them’s not our geese.» «Indeed! Whose then?»; «Well, you’ve directed the escaped convict.» «No, really!»; … exasperated: «Well, really – I’ve been baptized and that sort of thing. But look here.»;
10) прикрість, гнів: ah! George! God! my God! oh my God! Jove! o! oh! I see! tcha! tch! tut! tt! well, I never! yah! yach! Наприклад: «Yach! That's what makes the medical student the most disgusting figure in modem civilization.»;… indignantly: «Ah! You insist.»; «By George, if you're going to take it like this, Molly.»;… rather savagely: «My God – I never know whether you mean a single thing you say, Sybil.»;… disgust: «By Jar! Drunk again!»; «Tcha! If you'd only had the common decency to remember what happened when you came in.»;
11) злорадість, безжалісність: Ah! Наприклад:…with devilry: «Ah-h-h! You've done your hair up…»;
12) відчай: Christ! dear! dear me! deary – my! George! God! my God! oh my God! Jove! o! oh! о God! Ah God! good God! dear God! good Lord! Наприклад: «Christ! I'm done for it!»;… clasping his temples distractedly: «Oh dear! Oh dear! Nothing ever happens to me that happens to other people.»;… with a heart – broken cry: «Oh – God – no – not that –».

Вигуки, що виражають різні психічні стани, приємніyou!, gracious!, good gracious!, good heavens!, hat!, go to hell!, hell!, hem!, hum!, h 'm!, I'm blowed!, mm!, Lord!, oh, Lord!; good Lord!, my!, oh my!, my-o-my!, o!, oh!, oho!, oo!, really!; oh, really!; say!, I see!; well, I never!; what oh!, why! Наприклад: Here's a whacking letter from the family solicitor. «Great Heavens! Seventy! Two hundred!»; The spectacle drew from me a quick «Oh, ah,» for I was somewhat embarrassed.; «But, Bertie, you don't mean you know these Traverses?» «They are my Aunt Dahlia.» «My gosh!».Вигукові висловлення say! say! see! у різних контекстах мають прагматичне значення приємної й неприємної несподіванки, сюрпризу: «І say: I am in a luck today.», де I say пов’язане з позитивними емоціями і «Their father's dead – heart failure.» «I say!» і…coldly, rising: «Yes: I see», де вигукові висловлення I say, I see пов’язані з негативними емоціями. Не всі дослідники та словники відносять такі вигуки до цього класу слів. Так, В.Ціммер, вважає, що вони належать до вторинних, похідних вигуків, і виявляє у першому say! say!) – 10 значень, у в другому – 3 значення, виходячи із вживання їх у мовленні. А вигук why вказує на велику несподіванку, наприклад, «Why, man, I thought you were dead long ago.». Зазначимо, ще раз, що вживання вигуків з контекстуально-обумовленим значенням тісно пов’язане з невербальними засобами і, насамперед, з інтонацією. Д. Шіфрін відзначає: «Зараз навряд чи знайдеться лінгвіст, який заперечує, що інтонація невід’ємна від мови. Існує школа, яка вважає інтонацію частиною граматики в широкому значенні. Інша, не менш жива традиція, розглядає інтонацію як таку, що належить не граматиці, а інформаційному потокові. Третій підхід може бути умовно названий інтонаційно-контекстуалізованим». На наш погляд, третій підхід є найбільш сприйнятним, оскільки аналіз вигуків наочно підтверджує залежність значення вигукуfreezingly now then! Пор.: «Come, now; isn't there anything you feel you'd like to say.», де вигуком сome, now виражається запрошення, а в контексті…peremptorily: «Now then! Did you hear me give you an order?», now then має значення виклику.
6. Іронії: ah!, ho!, indeed!, o!, oh!, say!, soho!, what! i сарказму: ha!, hah!, o!, oh! Наприклад: «They think that now, sir, no more trouble from them.» «Indeed.», в якому вигук Indeed передає іронію, а у прикладі «Free England! Ha!», вигуком Ha! передається сарказм.
7. Сміху: ha-ha!, how!, частіше за все з афектом. Наприклад: «Ha-ha! Haw! That's the best – ha ha ha.»;
8. Глузування: aha!, ha!, hah!, ha ha!, really!, tut!, tt!, yach!, yah!. Наприклад: She leans her cheek on her hand and laughs at him. He turns again, angrily mocking at her: «Ha! ha! ha! What are you laughing at?»;
9. Вираження зверхності: ha!, hah! Наприклад: «На. Here's a league o'youth.»;
10. Докору: come!, oh come!, Jove!, how! now!, now then!, o!, oh!, so!, soho!, причому іллокутивна сила цих висловлень відрізняється за інтенсивністю від пом’якшеного докору come, come on, наприклад, «Well, now, that's a blooming shame, isn't it?…», до простого докору «Come on, you can do better than that!» та докору з відтінком роздратування… sharply: «How, Mrs. Pratt! Just because he's a foreigner.».
