Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) was the 32nd President of the United States. He was the only president to serve 4 terms. (1933-1945). He made many decisions that helped the US get out of the Great Depression. After FDR died, the 22nd Amendment was passed saying no president can serve longer than 2 terms. He served longer than any other president did. FDR was born in 1882. His early life consisted of studying law at Columbia University. He never to the final exam so he didn’t fully become a lawyer. He married his 2nd cousin, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, who was the niece of former president Teddy Roosevelt, in 1905. Together they had six children. FDR formally entered politics in 1910. During 1913 to 1920, he was the assistant secretary of the US Navy. In 1920, FDR was the vice-president candidate with James M. Cox. In 1921, he was diagnosed with polio. After recovering, he got back into law and became the vice president of Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland. He took over the NY branch where it was the most important handling of bonds for public officials. FDR became NY governor in 1929 with the help of his friend Alfred E. Smith. In 1932, FDR was the leading Democratic candidate with James Nance Garner beside him. FDR won only losing six out of 48. (New England- Republicans) His inauguration day was March 3, 1932. He said the famous lines; ” We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” His “hundred days” started by calling a session in Congress to talk about the Depression. On March 6, FDR made a “banking holiday” which was the start of the New Deal. FDR truely tried to help the people and wanted to make a change. He was mostly successfull with his New Deal Program. The New Deal was a group of programs made by FDR to help Americans get out of the Depression. It was also known as “alphabet soup”. The New Deal got the US out of the Great Depression. The programs were designed to give jobs out to Americans so they could live. These programs included the NRA, FERA, FDIC, CCC, AAA, TVA, HOLC, WPA, RFC, and NIRA. These programs insured banks, farmers, jobs, and much more. These programs also improved roads, made parks, and helped the arts. Each Program helped a different part of the the country and its people. Focusing only on some programs which were in the long list of programs in the New Deal program, it shows that it helped. The FHA or better known as the Federal Housing Administration helped people at that time who were in a middle class position and wanted to build or buy a new home in a secure manner. The adminstration was formed to insure long-term home mortgages and offered benefits to both middle class home buyers and lending institutions from which the borrowed their money to pay for the house. It guaranteed that loans would be secured by banks. This helped the housing idustry so much, causing new homes to be built and vacant ones to be inhabitted once again. Keeping this in mind there no question if it was beneficial. Building new homes also helps the wood, paint and tool industry. Skilled workers are needed, and unemployment goes down. This also helped the economy, the people and the lending institutions in the long- run. The FHA was incorporated into the new Deapartment of Housing and Urban Development also known as HUD. The Office continued its role as mortgage guarantor and widened it area of responsibilty to include mortgages lent to the owners of multifamily dwellings and to public housing authorities as well as individual homeowners. Focusing now on another program called the SSA also called the Social Security Administration. This program is the most known program from the New Deal program today. And we know that is was without question successfull. It secured people’s earned money so when they retire they still get money and don’t starve. It not only helps the people but also helps the government. The government takes the money and invests it in secure investments or works with it in a different way and gets money from the intrest of the money that the government doesn’t owe. Today the government has many problems with the social security but inspite that this program is now 62 years old, and it must have been successfull to be still in action .
