Racisim Essay, Research Paper
IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG ?
We live in the land of the free and the home of the brave, right? Is everybody free? The United States of America has gone through riots and even a war to ensure that people are treated equally, but even today it is evident that maybe the riots and the war just put a mask on the racisim that was once very open and accepted. Today, it seems as though people acknowledge the fact that we cannot openly be racists but many keep their thoughts hidden deep within them. This is what I believe causes racist attacks and confrontations. We say we live in the land in the free and I question that. Also, we say we
live in the land of the brave and I question this to. In most aspects the American people have earned the right to call themself brave, Americans have been through many struggles to become the super power we are today, but it seems to me that most American people are not brave enough to realize a very obvious problem in this country. Racisim is almost a taboo subject to most of the citizens. Almost like sex and pornography it is shunned by most people. They rather not talk about but they know it s there and they know unlike sex or pornography, racisim is wrong. America was started by people who did not want to be neglected by their country or told what to do in their country, so these people decided to leave their country and begin a new country. Now, I see something wrong here. Call me crazy but aren t we going against our own believes here as Americans by oppressing other races in these United States ??
I don t know but maybe the racisim in this country is so clear that people see right through it? I take a walk from one class to another on campus and I know what groups of people would accept me and what groups wouldn t. Now as white kid I dont think I can fully understand being black or a minorty but I can only imagine how much harder it must be. I admit if I was black I probably would look at a white person with a negative attitude. As a white kid though I ask myself, why do black people feel as though I dont like them just because I am white? or i ll wonder why they dont like because i am white. Also, I often wonder and find somewhat wrong that fraternaties and serorities are in a way segragated. One of my first days of school i was asking an upperclassmen about
frats because i was interested in joining one eventually, but i quickly changed my mind. After two weeks of school i realized it is almost as though a frat goes against everything that is wrong with this country. It seperates people into groups and because of this there is almost hidden animosity against the other group.
Just this past weekend I was hanging out with a bunch of friends watching the
Minnesota Vikings game. I want to try to make it clear that people do know that their is racisim hidden within almost everything. Now wether the statement I heard made is true or not I think the person had some kind of point. Dennis Green is the Vikings coach and he has been involved in discussions about racisim in the NFL. He has asked questions such as, Why there isn t many black head coaches and made statements such as black quaterbacks dont get a shot to make it in the NFL. So as we are watching the game Randall Cunningham throws yet another interception. He is off to a horrible season and nothing is going right for him. Thats when i heard this, This fucking nigger wont take him
out because he wants to give a nigger a shot! , well i heard this and i sat back for a second. I thought to myself this could be true, But then again we are talking about a great quarterback here. So i did not know what to think. I thought about this way, any other team this year with a struggling starting quarterback has benched him for some amount of time and thats usually the way it goes. If your not producing you get benched, but is Green trying to prove something. Something he feels so strongly about its worth a loss or two or three.
I can only be one person in this world. I know I am not a racist and everybody I encounter has the same shot of gaining my friendship. This is not hard to do. I only wish everybody everywhere would stop jugding people by the color of their skin or the way they look. We are society that is very advanced in all sorts of things but our eyes and our hearts are still acient when it comes to freedom and equality.
